What to Wear to a Valima as a Guest: Pakistani Wedding Outfit Guide 2025

What Is a Valima, Exactly?

For anyone who hasn’t attended many Pakistani weddings — or who needs a refresher — the valima is the reception hosted by the groom’s family, typically on the day after the barat. It is an Islamic tradition as well as a cultural celebration, and it marks the formal welcome of the new bride into the groom’s family.

Tonally, the valima is usually somewhat more relaxed than the barat. The bride and groom are no longer in full couture overdrive (usually). The formality of the barat ceremony has passed. The valima is a celebration — warm, social, and often focused on food, music, and extended family reunions.

As a guest, this tonal shift matters. You still need to be dressed formally and respectfully. But the valima gives you more flexibility than the barat did.
