Sherwani Guide 2025: How to Choose the Perfect Pakistani Groom Outfit

What Is a Sherwani? Structure and Style Explained

Before choosing a sherwani, it helps to understand what it actually is.

A sherwani is a long, formal coat-like garment worn by men at ceremonial occasions — primarily weddings. It buttons from collar to waist (or sometimes all the way down), typically hits between the knee and mid-calf in length, and is worn over fitted trousers, most traditionally a churidar (tight-fitting, gathered at the ankle) or a straight-cut shalwar.

It is not the same as a kurta shalwar. A kurta is a looser, shorter shirt-style garment worn in everyday life or at semi-formal occasions. A sherwani is structured, tailored, and ceremonially specific — wearing a kurta to barat when a sherwani is expected is like wearing smart trousers when a formal suit is required.
