Understanding the Groom’s Family’s Role in the Function Hierarchy
Before getting into what to wear, it helps to understand the social dynamics at each function — because these directly shape the dress code.
- Mehndi: Usually hosted by the bride’s family. The groom’s family attends as guests — important guests, but guests. Semi-formal is expected, not hosting-level formal.
- Nikkah: Can be hosted by either family. The tone is sacred and intimate. Dress should be dignified and restrained.
- Barat: This is the groom’s family’s main event. The groom arrives with his family — the procession, the dholkis, the sehra, all of it — and delivers the groom to the bride’s home or venue. The groom’s family is the focus.
- Valima: Hosted by the groom’s family. This is their reception. They are the hosts, and they dress accordingly.
This hierarchy determines everything about outfit choices.
