The Tradition of Flower Girls and Junior Bridesmaids at Pakistani Weddings
Pakistani weddings have always included children as active participants — not as formally structured as Western weddings with their rigid processionals, but organically woven into the fabric of the event. Little girls have traditionally carried flower petals at barat, sat beside the bride for photographs, and held the bride’s dupatta during the rukhsati.
Over the past decade, as Pakistani wedding photography and videography has become more cinematic and styled, the role of children has become more deliberate. Many brides now plan a flower girl moment at barat — a handful of little girls in coordinated outfits scattering petals as the bride enters. Some brides have a dedicated junior bridesmaid — a younger sister, niece, or cousin — who accompanies her throughout the day in a coordinated or complementary outfit.
This is not Westernisation — it is Pakistani families taking a tradition that was always there and making it more intentional.
