Understanding Pakistani Bridal Jewelry
A full Pakistani bridal look typically includes several pieces worn across different functions. Here’s what makes up the classic stack:
- Maatha patti — the ornamental headpiece that drapes across the forehead and into the hair parting
- Jhumar — a side-hanging tikka traditionally worn on the right side of the head; usually reserved for barat
- Choker — a close-fitting necklace, often layered with a longer necklace below
- Earrings — ranging from delicate studs for valima to heavy jhumkas or chandelier drops for barat
- Kangan / bangles — traditionally gold, though kundan and meenakari sets are popular for barat
- Haath phool — the hand harness connecting a ring to a bracelet; a signature barat piece
- Nath — the nose ring, often worn on barat and connected by a delicate chain to the hair
- Tikka — a forehead drop piece; simpler than maatha patti, more versatile
Not every bride wears all of these — but for barat, it’s common to see six or more pieces together. Each one individually can run anywhere from PKR 5,000 to PKR 150,000+ depending on material and craft.
