The Reality of Airline Weight Limits
Let us start with the numbers, because they matter more than most people expect.
Standard checked baggage allowances on routes to Pakistan:
- UK carriers (British Airways, Virgin Atlantic): Typically 23kg per bag, sometimes two bags at 23kg each on long-haul routes
- PIA (Pakistan International Airlines): Often 30kg on international routes — one of the more generous allowances
- Emirates, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines: Usually 30kg on routes through Gulf hubs
- Economy class on budget carriers: Can be as low as 20kg — check your specific booking
A fully embellished bridal lehenga set — skirt, blouse, dupatta, inner slip — can weigh between 4 and 8 kilograms. On a 23kg allowance, that is a significant portion of your total checked weight before you have packed a single other item. When you factor in gifts, shoes, jewellery, and the other outfits you need for the week’s worth of functions, the maths gets tight very quickly.
Excess baggage fees vary but are typically £10–£20 per kilogram over the limit on European carriers. A lehenga that pushes you 4kg over will cost you an extra £40–80 each way — on top of what you paid for the dress.
This is the context in which you need to think about your packing strategy.
